The Great Gothic cathedrals appear in Europe between 1000 and 1400. The architecture
was developed and perfected by the Goth tribes that ruled Europe after the falling of the Roman
empire. Pressure from the weight of the massive castles held the stones close together, this
prevented the great cathedrals from collapsing, and mortar was used to fill the gaps between the
rocks. Each layer of stones was given a perfect level to prevent the buildings from toppling.
Thick, bulky and dark vaults characterized Romanesque styles of architecture. The
architecture had round arches, massive drums like columns and round windows that allowed less
