Abstract

Mass shootings have increased over the past decades, prompting the need to implement better gun
control systems. This case study analyzes the events that took place on December 14, 2012 at
Sandy Hook Elementary School, where Mr. Adam Lanza shot twenty-six people and committed
suicide. Twenty elementary school children were killed during the shooting. The mass shooting of
students is one of many that have occurred in the country within the past decade. This case analysis
addresses the factors that made the shooting possible and suggests measures that could have been
taken to prevent its occurrence.

Gun shooting cases have been on the rise in the country. These activities have traumatic
effects on both the families of the victims who die and those who survive. Although the rules
governing gun control have improved over the years, there is still a need to implement better
strategies to reduce the rates of mass shootings. Some of the factors that have fueled gun-related
violence in the country include racial differences, economy, alcoholism and drug abuse, political
influence on people and differences associated with political party affiliations, and issues related
to mental health. Although people purchase guns with the intent of protecting themselves or for
hunting purpose, there has been an increased number of mass shooting, especially in schools.
This case analysis is based on the shooting that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School on
December 14, 2012, which resulted in the death of 26 people.
