It’s now more than two decades since the Black-German activist, writer, public
intellectual, educator with Ghanaian origin May Ayim died at the age of 36. Ayim is deemed to
have committed suicide by jumping off her apartment in Berlin on August 9th, 1996, after facing
serious personal setbacks such as depression, which was exacerbated by the psychological
torture of German racism and multiple sclerosis a disease she had been diagnosed with (Florvil,
2007). Her presentations, such as writings and speeches have today, formed a fundamental base
in the field of political science. Her talent as an educator and being a well-known writer both at
home and abroad serve as a form of intellectual activism and a medium for inciting sociopolitical change. In fact, May Ayim’s pieces (writings) of activism has since been a key source
of political and emotional energy in advocating for societal and political advancements.
Unlike other black diasporic women who produced pieces that promoted black’s
internationalism and intellectualism, intending to shape the culture and politics in the diaspora,
Ayim integrated West Africa’s diversity styles like ‘Blue’ which was a typical reflection of her
pursuit and interests in the trans-national black diaspora. In her first poetic writings, “Blues in
Black White,” she incorporated West-Africa’s Andikra Symbols, which reflected her Ghanaian
