Prompt: WEEK 8: Your reading this week consists of three pages from Understanding Science: • • • Competing ideas: A perfect fit for the evidence: http://undsci.berkeley.edu/article/0_0_0/howscienceworks_11 Competing ideas: Other considerations: http://undsci.berkeley.edu/article/0_0_0/howscienceworks_12 Even theories change: http://undsci.berkeley.edu/article/0_0_0/howscienceworks_20 I also want you to revisit the strategies from WEEK 2 offered at: https://www.lib.sfu.ca/about/branches-depts/slc/learning/thinking/critical-thinking POSTS Think about a claim you have heard someone make. This could be an extraordinary claim (like about the existence of Bigfoot) or an opinion-based claim (like that eating carrots will increase your IQ). Apply the strategies from https://www.lib.sfu.ca/about/branches-depts/slc/learning/thinking/criticalthinking to this claim and decide whether or not you agree with this claim. Write a post that clearly describes each of the following steps, including explicit reference to the strategies and practical exercises offered in the reading. MAKE SURE YOU NUMBER THESE STEPS IN YOUR POST! 1. FIRST STATE THE CLAIM. 2. STEP 1: Decide what you think and why you think it. 3. STEP 2: Seek other views and more evidence. YOU WILL HAVE TO INVESTIGATE THE EVIDENCE FOR AND AGAINST THE CLAIM. 4. STEP 3: Decide which view is most reasonable. 5. SUPPORT YOUR DECISION WITH EVIDENCE You can also bring in ideas from the lecture. REPLIES Evaluate the way in which each poster applies each of the three steps above. Do you see any holes in the posted argument or the application of the critical thinking steps? Responses to Answer Latisa White 1. Fermented Rice water increases hair growth. 2. I think that fermented rice water does increase hair growth. I believe this because fermented rice water has a lot of benefits for hair growth and provides the minerals hair needs to become stronger and more elastic. 3. Based on the news letter that I found it is said that women in china, Japan, and Asia have used rice water as a hair treatment for centuries. And it is said that fermented rice water has more benefits than regular rice water. fermented substances have a higher amount of antioxidants that may combat hair damage. there have also been reviews on youtube of people who have experimented with rice water and have seen results of length and elasticity. Some views on the benefits of rice water from people who have tried it did not get good results and felt as though rice has some repercussions to it. it caused their hair to become brittle and break after using it for so long and being consistent. According to Williams, calcium stores itself in our bones. If a person's body isn't observing enough calcium, or if a person has a lot of calcium built up in their hair when they try to use the rice water treatment, it can cause brittleness and breakage. 4. Although rice water is beneficial for hair growth based on word of mouth it is not scientifically proven to help all hair types. I feel as though all hair types are different and require a different kind of regimen, therefore rice water is not beneficial to everyone in increasing hair growth. 5. the links that I have shared below are evidence for both claims for and against using rice water for hair growth. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321353 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWvxAlvyZOo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgVNHPkLn_c https://www.thezoereport.com/p/rice-water-for-natural-hair-could-be-the-secret-to-fastergrowth-13225936 Chase Kline 1. A claim that I will make for this exact assignment will be the claim that "Ghosts are not real". This is a common folk tail that many people have a strong opinion on. Its interesting to see how many normal people have very different views on the paranormal. 2. I personally do not believe in ghosts. Doesn't seem to be likely. What is there millions of ghosts of dead people around here. If so we would interact at all times. While I do have view on a after life, I don't believe we have ghosts roaming around here on earth. 3. pro - 43% of Americans believe in ghosts, many video exist depicting ghosts, and people believe they have communicated with the ghost. The common theory is that people want comfort in knowing there diseased are not gone, knowing the diseased are somehow still around. against- not enough energy in the human body to let off a ghost considering we are mostly made of matter, no hard evidence to back up theories, old folk tail. Thousands of years people have been writing about ghosts with no real evidence. So many hoaxes and non striking evidence has resulted in the side of society that does not believe un ghosts. 4. I think that ghost are not real. I believe this because of the lack of credible evidence and lack of personal experinces 5.https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/ghosts-brian-cox-large-hadron-collider-cernreal-truth-standard-model-physics-a7598026.html
