She is primarily echolalic and seldom uses her language spontaneously to communicate with peers and teachers. She has a difficult time following directions and transitioning from one activity to the next. Molly is very fearful of social situations and often avoids social interactions. Molly spends the vast majority of her time on the playground alone with little peer interaction. Molly engages in stereotypical behaviors such as hand flapping, vocalizations, and eye gazing. She has been noted to slap herself in the head and has recently begun slapping parents and teachers. Molly is noted to have a short attention span, poor motor coordination, difficulty tying her shoes and managing snaps and buttons, and sensory seeking needs. Based on the above case study of Molly, you are going to write a 3-5 page informative essay that analyzes how Molly’s communication, behavior, social skills, cognitive skills, and sensory motor skills can be addressed in the classroom. This essay should include specific examples of strategies, key professionals, services and environmental supports that would be beneficial for Molly given her identified individual needs. When you have a student with autism in your classroom, it can be difficult to keep them on task and focused on the challenges they are faced with everyday. There has to be a plan in place to make sure students such as Molly have the same opportunity to be successful as a child without autism. There is information available to help organize the plan and it is the teacher's responsibility to make use of these resources to plan strategies and implement them on a daily basis without disrupting regular learning activities and the progress of the other students in the class. It is important to make use of all the resources that are available to the teacher, including professionals in the field of educating autistic students and other support services. Many teachers feel isolated and overwhelmed when faced with the difficulty of teaching an autistic child, therefore it is crucial to realize there is help available and that it is a team effort.A main strategy to help with Molly's difficulty with organization is to make sure there is a sequential order to fulfilling educational objectives. One of the traits of autism is the person's need for order in their lives because when there is a sense of disorder, it raises the level of anxiety for the student and they begin to act in a manner that can be disruptive to the rest of the class. The way to counter this is to review daily tasks in the morning with the student so they are clear as to what is expected of them. Write the tasks in order on a list and make the list available to the student so they can refer to it during the day. If Molly ignores the list or completes the tasks randomly, refer back to the list and try to get back on track. Eventually Molly will understand and appreciate the need for a schedule of activities and work to complete them in order and on time. Another strategy is to use clear and specific choices when giving directions. Autistic students become confused when they are presented with multiple ways of completing classroom activities. When that happens, they tend to become disruptive or they just give up and do not do the work.
