Climate change has been a widely debated topic in American politics for some time now. This
issue is now being discussed around the world, as catastrophic weather conditions, rising sea levels,
melting ice caps and continuously raising high temperatures effect the Earth's atmosphere. While most
scientists and climatologists agree that human activity is the direct cause for climate change, politicians
have chosen to use this important issue as a platform for divisiveness. Many Americans do not
“believe” that the changes to the Earth's climate are caused by humans and some do not even believe
that a change is occurring at all. Others are heavily involved in movements to educate the masses on
the issue of climate change and start taking action to change how humans use energy and pollute the
environment. Scientific and political discussions in regard to issues surrounding climate change are
happening around the world on a regular basis. The views of indigenous people can help to shape these
discussions, as they have very unique perspectives on environmental issues due to their religious and
moral belief systems and how they relate to nature. These views could help compliment the growing
number of politicians and scientists who understand that climate change is an issue that needs
immediate action and a collaboration of all human beings to do what is best for the planet.
Many researchers who are studying indigenous perspectives on climate change are engaging in
ideas of science and progress that are similar to what took place during the age of enlightenment.
During this period, a heavy concentration on science enabled people to view nature and the universe
differently. As people began to become more educated in new ideas, they strayed from theistic concepts
