In the 1960s, Lake Erie was mocked as dead for its high levels of pollution, but later
massive cleanup programs established the lake as a successful environmental story. The era of
initial pollution was the period of enormous industrialization around the Great Lakes, where
factory toxins found their way into water bodies and streams. Now the most significant problem
contributing to the increasing filth in the form of green-blue algae is the establishment of many
industrial, agricultural farms with heavy use of phosphorous as a primary nutrient. The farms
