them more or less credible than others?

• What is the tone and vocabulary of the article? What adjectives or verbs are used to describe the event?

• What sources does the article’s author rely on? Who is quoted?

• What is the position/location and length of the article? How is it presented on the page/site?

• If an image is used, what is its content and impact?

• How does the narrative change or stay the same with each new source?

• How might the above questions reveal biases in the news story?

• What overall impression does this article convey about the given topic?

• What difference does it make if one news source is describing an event in a different way than another?

• What issues should a reader keep in mind when reading the news stories you selected?

• Compare and contrast sources from one region to those from another. In what ways are they different or

similar in terms of their coverage? What information is included? Excluded? What is significant about

this?

Ground your analysis in scholarship.

Before making your main argument, read at least two (2) scholarly sources related to your topic. You may use

these in any way you feel will strengthen your argument and your paper: for current or historical background,

evidence, counter-arguments/approaches, and/or to help you evaluate the credibility of any of your sources.

Referencing and integrating scholarly sources will strengthen your analysis, thesis, and final conclusions about

the significance of your argument.

Make a credible, convincing and research-based argument.

Make an argument about the depiction of your topic (universal human right + current event/issue/movement

/idea related to this right). Include a strong and clear thesis statement and present your argument with

supporting arguments, evidence, and/or rebutted counter-arguments.

As such, the protection of digital information (digital privacy) is essential since a person’s digital footprint and information stored in digital media can either hurt or honor their reputation, be used to discriminate an individual during employment, identity theft among other risks. Article 12 in UDHR Article 12 is one of the most relevant fundamental freedom and right in the modern era. The article grants everyone the right to protection by the rule of law against any attacks and interference on their privacy or their loved ones, their homes or workplaces. Indeed, the article establishes privacy and protection thereof, as a fundamental right that should be protected and enforced by governments and authorities. But now, online privacy has been threaten by many things. Aljazeera: A Middle East News Source Obama-era online privacy rule overturned by Congress The article is an in-depth analysis of what inspired the controversial move by Congress to repeal the privacy legislation. It explicitly describes and faults the narrow vote to repeal by Republican as politically inspired, not objective of the privacy concerns of people. Reuters: A North American News Source Trump signs repeal of U.S. broadband privacy rules The source is a valuable and objective source of information on how repealing of the privacy legislation enacted by the Obama administration took place- it describes the aftermath of the repealing process- mass criticism and support by the Trump administration. It describes how supporters fault the Obama legislation for its apparent destabilization of the internet market. The Independent (UK): A European News Source House Republicans finalise controversial internet privacy law letting US companies sell browsing history The source explains the backlash caused by repealing the legislation. It describes how political as well as personal interests motivated the repeal. It also reiterates the transcending public arguments by supporters, who insist the law would help to streamline the internet sector, admist backlash and accusations by privacy advocates of personal and party vendettas. Reuters: A North American News Source Trump administration working on consumer data privacy policy The article articulates the problems and demerits of the decision by the Trump administration to reconsider its privacy laws and policies, as a result frequent data breaches that have compromised the personal information of millions of US citizens. It explains the rational behind the apparent u-turn by the Trump administration in their previous stance that loosened policies on data privacy. Washington Post: An International News Source Not Listed Obama proposes legislation on data breaches, student privacy The article outlines the steps and rationales behind formulation of the internet privacy policy enacted by Obama’s administration. The article articulates the importance of public privacy in the real world, and explains the benefits of the law- requirement of internet service providers to seek permission from users before sharing their privacy information or within 30 days of privacy breaches. Scholarly Article Boerman, Sophie C., et al. “Exploring Motivations for Online Privacy Protection Behavior: Insights From Panel Data.” This article mainly discusses the awareness of several different groups of people on the privacy of the Internet. With the popularity of the Internet, people are paying more and more attention to the privacy of the Internet. How do people protect their privacy to varying degrees. But people always lack the expertise to protect online privacy and want to do it without knowing it. Through this article, I can find the most fundamental problem of network privacy leakage. If I find the problem, then I can try to find the answer to this problem. Scholarly Article Pelteret, Marc, and Jacques Ophoff. “A Review of Information Privacy and Its Importance to Consumers and Organizations.” This Scholarly Article provides a new perspective, he discusses the issues consumers and organizations face in online privacy, and discusses what consumers and organizations should do. This is a cross-disciplinary study that shows the importance of online privacy. Internet services provide services while converting privacy into property. Should Internet companies provide compensation? This is a very detailed study that provides a direction. The next two things I will do to further this project are to find out what happened in these news sources and academic articles, what social impact was caused, and finally, have you found a reasonable solution and reached a consensus? What role did governments, Internet companies, and individuals play in these events, and how their presence affected the development of the events and To conclude, it can be it is important to prioritize people ’s privacy over any form of a desired market or political equilibrium during formulating and implementing policies. I want to request feedback about whether the sources I have chosen will allow me to study my topic more deeply. They just revealed a problem on the surface, and there was still a deeper discussion. I also want to know the necessity of this topic discussion, from which angles should I discuss this topic. Should I find more detailed cases, or more general cases. When reading Scholarly Articles, how should I find the main ideas of the article and the most useful part for my research. When I summarize, I should focus more on the government, Internet companies or individuals, or all the same. Critical Media Analysis
Introduction

Global human rights issues have always been on the front of newspapers and
digital gadgets. The necessity to solve hurdles in the modern-era magnifies the question of
the right to privacy. In the private sector, various technologies continue to mine user data, a
problem that is gradually stepping into social, economic, and political domains. Furthermore,
advancements like artificial intelligence can create a more hostile environment, where states
and institutions can control human behavior at unprecedented levels. Ideally, data-driven
technologies can benefit the universe if put into good use.
However, current malpractices intimidate human dignity, privacy, and the
practice of human rights. The latter are incorporated into the law, media coverage, and moral
standards. Consequently, the right to privacy is a universal human right under the UDHR, and
it has affected the considerable dynamics of global media. This paper encapsulates how
various media depictions magnify human rights in contemporary society.
Comparing Media Coverages
Reuters: A North-America Coverage
Reuters, a global news agency, is famed for factual reporting and minimal use
of bias. Further, the corporation sources its information from reliable sources, which
magnifies the credibility of its reports. The coverage on consumer data privacy in the Trump
administration typifies Reuters’ approach. David Shepardson, the Author, uses precise and
standard, few jargons, to make the issue relatively comprehensible for all classes of users.
Furthermore, the corporations and institutions quoted are credible, which makes the article
reliable and relatable for readers.

The two-page article reviews how the Trump administration collaborates with
big firms in the implementation of privacy policies. Indeed, data privacy is a significant
contemporary issue driven by rampant breaches that put personal information at risks.
California and the European Union have spearheaded the implementation of protection rules,
and other states, like Washington, have ongoing plans.
Over the years, Corporations like Facebook and Yahoo have been on the
limelight for data breaches and consumer privacy rights. In 2018, Facebook confirmed that
the private information of 70 million users in the United States had been shared illegally with
Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy firm. Additionally, lawmakers also accused
Facebook of fraudulent data exchanges with four Chinese firms. Similarly, in 2013, 3 billion
Yahoo accounts were hacked, along with subsequent data theft.
Today, however, big firms, internet providers, and trade unions combine
efforts to enforce consumer privacy protections. Corporations are mandated to demonstrate
caution in the use of consumer data. Similarly, consumers are awarded significant control
over how firms use their private information. Indeed, Shepardson (2018) explores the issue of
data privacy from the context of three stakeholders, consumers, firms, and the government.
Nonetheless, consumers’ rights are central to the paper as it articulates how different
administrations, corporations, economic blocs, and organizations strive to protect consumers’
privacy.
The Independent: European Source
The Independent, a British news corporation, is famed as a political-based
media house. In the context of factual reporting, The Independent is rated “High,” unlike
Reuters’ exemplary rank. The firm has occasionally been accused of using jargons to
influence audiences through emotional or stereotypic appeals. Nevertheless, the firm

disseminates relatively accurate information, but, at times, requires supportive investigations.
Conclusively, The Independent is a trustworthy news source, but the firm uses loaded
language on their headlines to influence audiences.
The short publication addresses the issue of privacy laws, and how
discrepancies in implementation allow firms to continue selling users’ browsing history. Over
the years, political and private interests have overshadowed the legislation of privacy
regulation in the United States. On the other hand, the public argues that the law has power
and authority over private and political vendettas, and thus can streamline the internet
industry. Therefore, the publication advocates for human rights by addressing the issue of
privacy laws and exposing political discrepancies in their implementation. Further, the article
evaluates the impacts of various moves and provisions on user privacy (Farand, 2017).
Nevertheless, the structure and framework of the article typify the general
description of The Independent, as an entity. Indeed, the heading capitalizes on loaded
language to appeal a potential reader. Furthermore, one image publications advertisement
section contains an image of the U.S President, Donald Trump and a quote “anti-immigrant.”
A combination of sensitive imagery and the focus on republicans confirm a sense of political
bias, a stra...
