Being the best student calls for more than attaining top grades but also a more balanced
lifestyle, it calls for studying smart as opposed to studying hard. As a foreign student in America
over the years, and over the course of my residency I have experienced a lot of growth as well as
learned a lot that I thought it would be possible. I came to this country from Cuba and roughly
knew what I wanted to achieve, and becoming the best student was one of them. Despite the
language initial hiccups, I knew what I wanted to be and the path to follow to achieve my
dreams. I undertook to learn English as a first step towards achieving my heart desires. I went
through an English program that opened up more opportunities in terms of jobs and pursuing
further education in nursing, my chosen career. I learnt early in my stay that learning English
was important and now can write my class assignments and confidently express myself in and
outside the classroom or workplace. I am now able to think for myself as well as find answers to
things I do not know. Most important is learning how to relate with people from different
