Introduction
The tremendous advancements in technology have spurred the growth of the computer
game industry during the last several years. This growth has enabled the continued spread of
gaming options to new platforms. Companies creating computer game software are continually
exploring ways in which they can maximize profits by distributing these games. As such, there
are different business models, such as the free-to-play as well as the pay-to-play model, which
allows the companies to receive some monetary gains from users of these games. This research
explores these models to ascertain the one that will enable the companies to maximize their
returns.
A Review of the Free-to-Play (F2P) and Pay-to-Play Gaming Models
The free-to-play model may be described as a game business model that allows the player
to access freely, the core of the game without having to pay first. Game makers have realized the
need to attract more players to their software and offer them attractive incentives to induce more
purchases on the in-game products. Users do not need to make any monetary investments to
download the games (Riekki, 2016). The free-to-play model allows the company to monetize
while maintaining the happiness of the users effectively. This aspect requires the game makers to
establish a careful balance of the free software products, while creatively pushing the clients to
buy the premium content (Nanda Kumar, 2016).
According to Luton (2013), the free-to-play model presents a significant opportunity in
the sense that the current generation consists of people who are heavy internet users, and that
free products generally attract the most significant proportion of internet audiences. With the
