Introduction
Global warming is the response of the planet to the increased levels of greenhouses gases
in the air or atmosphere. These gases create a blanket that traps the heat from the sun and sends it
back to the surface of the planet. This crisis has been caused by human economic activities
resulting in the emission of these gases (Liu, Bauman & Chuang, 2019). If more gases are
emitted in the atmosphere, the global warming phenomenon may intensify, causing the
temperatures on planet earth unbearable. This paper explains the link between increasing carbon
dioxide emissions and economic growth. It also discusses the free-rider problem and the negative
externalities associated with global warming. Lastly, the paper discusses possible global
warming solutions and the reasons why I am optimistic that these solutions are practical.
a. Economic growth and the rising levels of CO2 emissions
One of the greenhouse gases that are considered as the primary cause of environmental
degradation and global warming is carbon dioxide. It is argued that during the early stages of
economic development, there is a high demand for environmental goods leading to pollution.
Nonetheless, as the growth of the economy intensifies, there is less pressure on the environment,
making its quality to improve. Right now, the major problems facing people in preserving the
environment and ensuring there is economic development (Liu, Bauman & Chuang, 2019).
Deterioration of the environment causes global warming concern that is mainly caused by
greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Unlike other resources such as economic good,
environmental services may have an external impact on future generations. Degradation of the
environment quality is linked to development and industrializations, which are economic growth
indicators.
