The dance performed by Khamla Somphanh and Yayoi Bambara is a perfect example of a common type of contemporary dance-one which emphasizes rhythm, strength, and physicality with a special concentration on movement through space and body alignment. In this dance, the music, scenery, movement and costuming work together to help expose the theme.
The dance performed by the artists is clearly a combination from both the west and the east coast, and several dance techniques can be easily noticed, including Horton and Ballet. As with many other contemporary dancing styles, these artists utilize both what is known as the strong foot work of ballet, several upper body movements and many elements from many cultures, such as Chinese and African styles, although it is not always easy to correctly identify the origin of a particular movement.

Another important aspect of the dance is that it manages to successfully distance itself from the classically accepted methods of choreography that involve a climax-anticlimax structure and a rather predictable rhythm. The lack of a structure in the routines of a linear manner sometimes surprises or even trigger an alarm in the audience. In this dance, every movement, gesture, and level of lighting can be considered a form of expression, but an expression that only had the meaning given by the audience.

In regards to its core elements, it can be easily noticed how the dance rejects the typical ballet's leg technique in favor of the modern dance's stress on the torse. Another important aspect of the dance is its unpredictable change in direction, speed, and rhythm, and the presence of many actions occurring at the same time. The dance also impresses by its suspension of symmetry and perspective in ballet scenic frame perspective, such as hierarchies, front, and center. Finally, and perhaps the most impacting, is the apparent independence between music and dance. At first, the independence between these elements gives you the impression that something is wrong, out of place. However, once one familiarizes with the core elements of the act, the asynchrony between music and movement begins to feel more than appropriately, as if it is only through this independence that each part of the act can represent itself for what it is.

While this dance has one obvious theme, there seems to be another theme-represented at a subtle level-that appear in all dances performed by Khamla Somphanh and Yayoi Bambara-the theme of freedom. The spontaneous movements, the apparently asynchrony between the dance and the music, the eclectic combination of different types of music and dance style-they all imply freedom. It is through such freedom that the dancers are able to express the true meanin...
