Sociological Perspectives: Racist Imagery Depicted in Media Madison Hansen, Lauren Peiler, and Chloe Skahan Introduction To Sociology ❖ What is Sociology? ➢ ❖ What do Sociologists study? ➢ ❖ The study of relations, characteristics and interactions within groups of people. Groups of People ■ Race ■ Class ■ Gender ■ Sexuality ■ Relations What type of questions do Sociologists ask? ➢ Questions involving social meaning or patterns of a phenomenon. Must involve groups rather than individuals and needs to address patterns or Assumptions ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Individual identity is largely determined by the group(s) to which one belongs to Human behavior is deeply influenced by the beliefs and values of these groups Knowledge is socially constructed There are imbalances amongst these groups as they are intimately intertwined with one another Methods ❖ ❖ ❖ Qualitative ➢ Observations that gather non numerical data ➢ Characteristics, concepts, meanings, and metaphors ➢ Why and how a phenomenon will occur Quantitative ➢ Numerical data: mathematical/statistical ➢ Developing mathematical theories and hypotheses Conversational Analysis ➢ Study of social interaction ➢ Verbal and non-verbal interactions are observed in everyday life situations Methods ❖ ❖ Comparative Historical Research ➢ Examines historical events ➢ Creates explanations through direct comparison ➢ Builds theories that refers to present day Survey ➢ Questions that extract specific data from a particular group of people ❖ Epistemology ❖ ❖ Pragmatism ➢ Practical ideas are accepted and unpractical ideas are not ➢ Theory that it is the driving force of racism ➢ Determines the status quo and how certain narratives can be told Positivism ➢ Approach that focuses on scientific evidence ■ Experiments ■ Statistics ➢ Reveals how society operates Constructivism ➢ Knowledge shaped by social and cultural context ➢ Social Epistemology ■ Collective knowledge reflects individual knowledge and it is the interactions amongst, or social dimensions of knowledge, that reveals truth. Concepts & Theories ❖ ❖ ❖ Symbolic Interactionism ➢ View of social behavior that focuses on linguistics and gestural communication ➢ Face to face interactions Functionalism ➢ How certain aspects of society adapt or function Conflict Theory ➢ How the elite control the poor (weak) ➢ Competition for sources ❖ ❖ ❖ Coherentism Theory – Beliefs are justified if they cohere with other beliefs a person holds, each belief is justified if it coheres with the overall system of beliefs Internalism and Externalism ➢ Deals with the justification of beliefs ➢ Internalism: all beliefs are justified ➢ Externalism: beliefs must be justified by objective features of the world ➢ Legitimization of knowledge within a group and individual level Skepticism- A variety of viewpoints coinciding and conflicting with one another making the possibility of knowledge obsolete. Journey of Our Question Media Award Shows Lack of Diversity Not a lot of research Films Lack of Diversity More research QUESTION How does the lack of diversity in film influence societies view on stereotypes?? Article One Colombian Criminals, Moral Whites: Reproducing and Resonating Hierarchy in US Film ❖ ❖ ❖ Phenomena ➢ The portrayal of race in U.S. Film Epistemology ➢ Empirical Research ■ Analyzing U.S. Films that portray Columbian characters Assumptions ➢ P.O.C characters are portrayed through stereotypes ■ Colombian = Drug lord ➢ White Morality ■ White characters are the heroes ➢ U.S. and Colombia Relations ■ Societies view of Columbia impacts the use of stereotypes used in film ➢ How U.S. Films impact its culture and society ■ “Storytelling” https://www.sonypictures.com/m ovies/colombiana Colombian Criminals and Moral Whites cont. ❖ ❖ ❖ Concepts & Theories ➢ Racism ➢ Stereotypes ➢ Representation ■ How does the representation affect societies view of different races. Methods ➢ Content Analysis ■ U.S. Films containing or focusing on Columbian characters ● Acknowledged when stereotypes and negative portrayals of Columbia occured Conclusions ➢ Films use stereotypes to negatively portray Columbia, influencing societal views ➢ U.S. society is highly influenced by the film industry ➢ The lack of diversity in films is due to the “White Hero” role https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109444/ Article Two Race, Gender, Hollywood: Representation in Cultural Production and Digital Media’s Potential for Change ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Phenomena ➢ Popular Culture ➢ Mass Audience Consumption Epistemology ➢ Positivism: Trends & Correlations Assumptions ➢ The backbone of societal culture is reflected through the values, attitudes, and opinions of those working within culture industries ➢ The quality of representation characterized by the participation of minorities largely determines the parameters for the kinds of culture that can and can not be produced accurately and effectively Concepts ➢ Numerical Representation represents social groups presence or absence within a realm and is usually in terms of proportional representation in regards to population size. ➢ Quality of Representation includes the types of roles that the groups occupy (multi vs one dimensional, narrative vs documentary, typecasted, ect.) ➢ Centrality of Representation accesses how central, or integral, certain groups are to an industry’s core institutions Race, Gender, Hollywood cont. ❖ ❖ ❖ Theories ➢ Because cultural products are tied to the meanings ascribed to them by those working in culture industries, at stake in the production of popular culture is the ability of various social groups to develop and disseminate their own meaning systems. Thereby, understanding the demographic characteristics and experiences provides insight as to why stereotypical and limited creative visions might emerge. Methods & Data ➢ Content Analysis ➢ Observational and Conversational Analysis ➢ Numerical Data & Statistics ■ The Hunt et al. (2014) Hollywood Diversity Report, which analyzed 1,061 television shows between the years of 2011-2012, showed that minorities only directed 2% of broadcast comedies and and dramas Conclusions ➢ Creative visions are severely inhibited by the lack of diversity on and off screen ➢ Films with larger budgets tend to generate larger grosses, thus when cultural laborers have similar quality and amounts of representation, the outcomes are more equal. ❖ Final Conclusions Lack of diversity (on and off screen) influences societal perceptions of harmful stereotypes by not only reflecting inequality but by further perpetuating them as well. ❖ ❖ Disproportionate representation of racial/ethnic minorities in media industries translates to the creation of a societal culture with stereotypical images and limited created visions on screen Those in charge of the narrative (i.e. White men) exercise cultural imperialism and hegemony with unilateral control over the images media produces such that these biased images can influence social behavior Technological advancements such as new digital media platforms may provide avenues for change by disrupting who is in control of the narratives and myths that are being produced as well as how they are being presented to the masses. Methods

■ Psychologists get a clear idea based on how and why people
behave in a certain way.
❖ Comparative historical research
■ Originated from a patient’s personal history in clinical
medicine.
■ It is thus an explorative method of research.
■ Provide psychologists with ideas that can be tested via other
methods.
■ Aids in determining the relation...
