DEPRESSION AMONG ELDERLY MALES

2

Depression among elderly males has grown quite common in the recent past. Several
males get to suffer from depression as they progress on age wise. Males get to suffer from
depression due to changes that come along as life progresses. To begin with, retirement is one
of the main causes of depression among elderly males. Once the elderly males get to retire,
they start being depressed as they are concerned with their source of income. Retirement is a
major cause of depression among the elderly males. Most elderly males end up being
depressed as their retirement age approach since they get concerned with their means of
survival after their retirement. Most males are usually in denial of the fact that they will retire
at one point of their life. Therefore, once their retirement age approaches most men end up
being depressed since the reality of life gets to strike them.
Secondly, the death of loved ones also leads to depression among the elderly males.
Most males by the time they are in their old age have witnessed several deaths of their loved

up being depressed since witnessing one death after the other leads to gradual depression.
Witnessing several deaths leads to depression among the males and may even cause them to
have thoughts such as committing suicide. This is in the context that some of these men end
up witnessing the deaths of their wives and therefore, this leads to their depression even the
more.
In addition to that, most males suffer from isolation as they progress age wise.
Isolation among the elderly increases as they advance in age since they end up having their
children move out of their homes and therefore they end up being left all alone. Most of the
elderly males especially the widowers end up being depressed once they find themselves
alone. Once they start seeing themselves being isolated, they end up thinking much and this
contributes greatly to depression among the elderly since they start thinking of all the issues
they are facing in their life. Therefore, increased isolation greatly contributes to depression
