Different meanings of the term theory
A theory might simply be a guess, an explanatory or predictive guess of the sort, where
an outcome is guessed by the speaker or he or she suggests a causal relation. In other words, one
can also define theory as a model comprising one or several hypothetical entities constructed
with the intention of accounting for unexplained, mysterious phenomena. A speculative
explanation is proposed by such a theory, which, necessitates experimental testing for
establishing to what extent the model is suitable for empirical data it tries to explain.
One can furthermore define theory as an explanatory system that defines symmetries,
states common values, along with integrating consistencies in a particular subject matter. The
similar requirements of being submitted to experimental checks are not carried by these last sorts
of theories as these theories are derived from observation and are data-driven and these theories
are not established before experimentation. Integrative theories, in this sense, are not
hypothetical; these theories describe deprived of guessing. In such an explanatory system,
theoretical terms do not prevent experimentation; relatively, they are derived from it.
Explanations do not express processes or entities beyond observation; relatively, a description
comprising explanations are statements regarding observed regularities. It has been proposed by
Skinner that behavioral science might get benefited from the formation of the last sort of theory
(Chiesa, 1994).
