Crisis in Iran
On 3rd January this year, a U.S. drone targeted and hit, Qasem Soleimani, a major
general of Iran's IRCG (Baker, Bergman, Kirkpatrick, Barnes, & Rubin, 2020). The war between
America and Iran has continued for more than forty years. The origin of this war dates back to
1953 when America organized a coup d'etat in Iran to overthrow Iran's nationalist, secular, and
popular Prime Minister, Mossadegh. The America coup led to an Iranian revolution in 1979 that
protested against Shah's regime. The protests led to Ayatollah Khomeni, a Muslim scholar, being
put on the Republic of Iran's throne. The Muslim government is still in power in Iran today.
Although the tensions between the two countries have existed throughout their history, they
climaxed in 2020 after Soleimani was assassinated in a U.S. airstrike.
According to President Donald Trump, he ordered the assassination of the general, a
move that was considered too provocative (Baker, Bergman, Kirkpatrick, Barnes, & Rubin,
2020). Iran retaliated the murder of Soleimani by firing ballistic missiles at two military bases in
Iraq that hosted U.S. troops. Fortunately, Trump decided to respond to the missile attack
diplomatically and not through military signals. The killing of general Soleimani brought the two
countries at a brink of war, and a fight between America and Iran would have serious
consequences: the Iranian people would brutally and cruelly suffer, and other countries would be
devastated through wrecked infrastructures and flattened cities. In other words, the war would
validate the past adage that conflict breeds unintended consequences. Following this scenario,

the debate about whether Trump's attack on Iran to awaken the tensions between the two nations
was right or wrong can be explained using several classical theories of social stratification given
by Marx, Durkheim and Weber. According to some methods, Trump should not have acted
towards Iran the way he did (1Marx and Engels). However, some theories support his actions
(2Weber).
According to the Marxist conflict theory, society is always in a perpetual conflict state,
where people are competing for limited resources (1Marx and Engels). The theory holds that
maintaining social order in a community or nation must involve dominating and declaring power
over the others. Class conflict is a term used to describe political tensions in society because of
socio-economic competitions among social classes (1Marx and Engels). Class conflict can be
manifested through direct violence, such as assassinations and fights for resources (2Marx a...
