PATH-GOAL STYLES OF LEADERSHIP

I believe that participative and supportive leadership styles are my path-goal styles of
leadership. In my opinion, a leader that makes the working environment pleasant by supporting
the employees and showing them that he or she is friendly, approachable, and is concerned about
their affairs gets the best out of his subordinates. According to Clark (2015), the supportive
leadership style is effective in work situations where relationships and tasks are physically
challenging. I believe that everyone has his or her psychological issues to tackle and therefore a
leader who is able to handle employee’s psychosocial pressure is able to get the best out of the
employees. On the other hand, participative leadership involves consulting and discussing with
the subordinates about serious issues and decisions within the workplace before they are
implemented. This approach gives the employees the opportunity of providing their views which
makes them part of the organization. In situations where the employees are highly trained, I
believe participative style will allow them to contribute their ideas, which can significantly
influence the performance of the firm.
Supportive leadership relates to directive leadership in that the leader in both situations
informs the subordinates on what they need to do, but in supportive the leaders does this in an
approachable and friendly way. Supportive leadership is related to achievement leadership style
in that when the leader sets the goals for his or her subordinates, he or she continues to support
them to achieve these goals. Supportive is related to participative leadership in that the leaders is
approachable and therefore, he consults with the followers before making critical decisions. My
use of participative leadership relates to directive leadership in that I have to follow up with how
employees perform tasks in order to ensure success and best results. Participative leadership is
linked to achievement leadership in that by consulting with the employees and discussing with

them on a personal level gives them the confidence and motivation to achieve the set goals and
objectives.
