Sometimes I like sitting at the coffee shop in the evening waiting for my friends to come and join me later in the evening. As I sat there, my eyes ran over the road while I slowly sipped my hot coffee with the caffeine keeping me warm. Across the road, I notice a group of small crowed standing at the corner of the building backroad. All I could smell was smoke coming from there. I was not new to me at all, because I just knew those kids was smoking cigarette. People who smoke cigarette always makes me wonder why they choose to do that, because I really do not see any desire in swallowing and puffing out smoke. As I observed the crowed speaking in a very low tune of voice, I just wanted to know what was going through their minds. I just could not stop thinking, if they knew how dangerous cigarettes is to their health? And would they even stop smoking? I wander why does the country not stop allowing tobacco? There are two types of people who smoke cigarette, the active smokers, and the inactive smokers. The active smokers are the people who smoke cigarette on a everyday basis while the inactive smokers are the people who inhale the cigarette smoke when they are near the active smokers. I sat there wandering to myself whether cigarette smoking should be outlawed in the country. During my childhood, I knew some neighbors who used to smoke cigarette. I lived next door with them most of my life. Sometimes they would come over to meet and greet my family, I just could not help noticing the discoloration of their teeth and their yellow fingers and their clothes with cigarette burn marks on them. I rare occasion do you find smokers attractive in conversation since their mouths sting when they open them? These are disgusting to others, and it naturally makes them feel uneasy whenever they are at a full place and cannot give their opinion on certain matters even if they had grate ideals. As I sat at the coffee shop, I saw notice that the group was increasing in number. I also notice there were woman who were clearly pregnant among the group. I wander if they knew how much danger they were putting their unborn babies into. The nicotine found in tobacco is always harmful to foetals development and can even cause miscarriage to the mother which could sometime lead to death of the mother. I sat there wishing that the government should ban the use of cigarettes in this country. A I was still waiting for my friends to join me, I just could not stop concentrating on the smokers group. I saw one of them throw a remaining piece of cigarette to the wall. The cigarette was still burning because the guy who threw it did not put it off. Fortunately the weather was chilly at the time because the cigarette burn out and went off. In other causes if the cigarette was thrown out maybe on a dry wood or paper it could have cause fire or lead to a wildfires causing a disaster. I wandered if the group knew how much they were risking their health. I have seen many people diagnosed with lung cancer due to cigarette smoking. It is very common to see people who has cigarette addiction with dry lips most of the time. I use to ask on of my best friend why does he like smoking cigarettes, and he knew how harmful smoking is. He would explain to me how buying a cigarette from a shop he was building over the country economy that the money he paid will be use by the tobacco company to pay tax to the government. I do understand that some communities like the native Americans us tobacco for their religious ritual which makes me think what is going to happen if the government decided to outlaw cigarette, how will this native Americans communities find the supplies for their rituals. Also as I sat at the window looking at the group, I could notice them joking and laughing wholeheartedly. I then thought it will not be fair if the government outlaw smoking, because it seem like stopping cigarette smoking will have a big effect on the a lot of people and according to the country declaration of independence, every person has the right to happiness. During my daily busy movement and activities, I overheard one or two incident on cigarette smoking. I have also seen people try to snatch women handbags and when they get cult they tell stories on how they just wanted to buy a cigarette. Many clashes and fights and clashes that I have seen between the road kids are driven by the scramble for a cigarette piece. I then glance at my watch and ordered another cup of coffee, I saw that it was getting late and saw the group had started separating slowing, to them, they most have had a very nice day, but to me I was left with a lot of questions going through my mind. I wondered what type of ideas they had sheared, if they were planning to quit smoking soon or they will just as always ignore the label on the cigarette packet which always warns them on digging their graves. As I saw them leaving, I thought I could do something that will change their minds so that they would stop smoking. I was just about to give up waiting for my friend when he entered the coffee shop. He freely apologized for keeping me waiting for a long time. He sat down and also ordered a warm cup of coffee. I just knew that we were going to have a very long chart when I notice him adjusted his seat to be more comfortable. I than knew the right topic to discuss when he popped into his jacket pocket and removed a cigarette knocked it on the table and removed his lighter. Cigarettes are harmful to our health and smoking should be outlawed. CLRC Writing Center Structure of a Personal Narrative Essay “Narrative” is a term more commonly known as “story.” Narratives written for college or personal narratives, tell a story, usually to some point, to illustrate some truth or insight. Following are some tools to help you structure your personal narrative, breaking it down into parts. The “Hook” Start your paper with a statement about your story that catches the reader’s attention, for example: a relevant quotation, question, fact, or definition. Introduction Set the Scene Provide the information the reader will need to understand the story: Who are the major characters? When and where is it taking place? Is it a story about something that happened to you, the writer, or is it fiction? Thesis Statement The thesis of a narrative essay plays a slightly different role than that of an argument or expository essay. A narrative thesis can begin the events of the story: “It was sunny and warm out when I started down the path”; offer a moral or lesson learned: “I’ll never hike alone again”; or identify a theme that connects the story to a universal experience: “Journeys bring both joy and hardship.” “Show, Don’t Tell” Good story telling includes details and descriptions that help the reader understand what the writer experienced. Think about using all five senses—not just the sense of sight—to add details about what you heard, saw, and felt during the event. For example, “My heart jumped as the dark shape of the brown grizzly lurched toward me out of the woods” provides more information about what the writer saw and felt than, “I saw a bear when I was hiking”. Body Paragraph Supporting Evidence In a personal narrative, your experience acts as the evidence that proves your thesis. The events of the story should demonstrate the lesson learned, or the significance of the event to you. Passage of Time Writing about the events of your experience using time chronologically, from beginning to end, is the most common and clear way to tell a story. Whether you choose to write chronologically or not, use transition words to clearly indicate to the reader what happened first, next, and last. Some time transition words are next, finally, during, after, when, and later. Transitions In a narrative essay, a new paragraph marks a change in the action of a story, or a move from action to reflection. Paragraphs should connect to one another. For example, the end of one paragraph might be: “I turned and ran, hoping the bear hadn’t noticed me”, and the start of the next might be: “There are many strategies for surviving an encounter with a bear; ‘turn and run’ is not one of them.” The repetition of words connects the paragraphs. (What does the change in verb tense indicate?)* Conclusion 1/09 The Moral of the Story The conclusion of a narrative include the closing action of the event, but also should include some reflection or analysis of the significance of the event to the writer. What lesson did you learn? How has what happened to you affected your life now? Outlining Your Narrative Try applying this structure to your own writing: write sentences for the corresponding elements of your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion in the space provided below. Introduction: Begin your paper with a “hook” that catches the reader’s attention and set the scene. Where is the event set? What time of year? How old were you when this happened? State your thesis: what you learned, or how the event is significant to you. Body paragraphs: write three significant moments from the beginning, middle, and end of the event. Para. 1: Beginning Action Topic sentence: Detail 1. Detail 2. Detail 3. Para. 2: Middle Action Topic sentence: Detail 1. Detail 2. Detail 3. Para 3: End Action Topic sentence: Detail 1. Detail 2. Note: Don’t forget to “Show, Don’t Tell”: List sounds, smells, sights, tastes, and textures that you remember. Your experience is your “evidence”. Use transition words to mark the passage of time. Detail 3. Conclusion: Analyze and reflect on the action of the story, including how the events are significant to you. Writing Strategies to Consider First Person vs. Third Person Narratives are a mode of writing in which writers often use first person perspective (“I saw”, “I did”). Check with your instructor to determine whether you can use “I” when telling your story. *Verb Tense: Reporting vs. Reflecting The events of most narratives are told in past tense: “As I hiked, I felt the warm sun on my back.” Use present tense when reflecting on the events: “Now I know how unprepared I was”. Notice the change in tense in this sentence as the writer reflects on the past event, from the present.

Hello. I am Bruce David Wilner, a computer scientist and electrical engineer living in south Florida.
Thank you for choosing me to assist you.

I have used your essay as a starting point, but I have transformed it rather dramatically. I used your
coffee shop adventure to “set the scene,” but I tried to be rather more analytical. There’s no need for
you to provide continued “action” to support each point: you’ve drawn the reader in, and it’s fine to
just hammer away at the reasons for outlawing smoking, giving a strong argument for each one. I also
added even more rationales for banning cigarettes, as well as some discussion of the difficulties
associated with them. Finally, I added a more powerful concluding paragraph. Make sure you
understand any new words you may not have seen—like “fixity,” which means “firm resolution of
purpose” or “the state of being firmly convinced.”

One of my favorite ways to spend an evening is to hang out in the corner coffee shop, waiting for my
friends to join me for a bite to eat or, on a winter’s night, a steaming hot beverage. The other day, as I
sat in my empire ...
