Influence of Group’s Size on Social Interaction
The size of s group significantly influences its functions and productivity. When a group
increases in size, different roles emerge, which affects operations and interactions within the
group. Smaller groups are known to accomplish their tasks faster than larger groups.
Furthermore, groups that are smaller in size are more productive than larger groups. Large
groups are, however, advantageous because they dig deep into the facts, gather wider opinions
and have a wider scope of generating solutions (Hare, Borgatta & Bales, 2015). When the size of
a group increases, individual member contribution also deceases. The goals and objectives of a
larger group size may easily become dispersed because the responsibilities of individual
members become scattered. Individual performance in large groups often becomes redundant.
Large groups do not show a clear connection between individual input and the overall group
output. This factor cannot be maintained in a large group because its performance cannot be
attributed to an individual group member (Hare, Borgatta & Bales, 2015).
When a group is large, its efficiency tends to be reduced. This may occur especially if
subgroups emerge from a large group. Large groups tend to produce subgroups and this scenario
reduces the participation of some members in the group. When a group is large, the decisionmaking process becomes very slow and time-consuming. A few members of a large group tend
to appear dominant while the rest members of the group tend to remain dormant in various
activities of the group. When a group is large, the pressure to stick to the group's norms and
regulations becomes high and the expectation of perfect behavior also reaches becomes high. It
is common in large groups to find leaders punishing and even using negative reactions to have
