BETWEEN IMAGE AND WORD IN-CLASS WRITING WORKSHOP The goal for writing assignment 1 is to dig into the meaning behind your photographer's work. We're doing this by exploring their work through a variety of thematic readings of which you've been tasked with relating those ideas to your artists work. In the end, the paper should be an exploratory research essay where you present your findings on what the work of your artist means with scholarly research to back it up. *IN-CLASS WRITING: So far, you've done 4 in-class writing and 4 at home writings related to your artist and their work. Before coming to class today you should have reread all of these. Go through each of these writings and make a list of the what the main point or idea that came out of each of these writings. We'll use this as the basis for the writing workshop. WRITING AN OUTLINE Introduction (What is your thesis statement) What is the main idea of what you want to say in your paper? What are you claiming the artist's work means based on the research and writing you've done? Body (What images and arguments do you use for your body) You should be discussing AT LEAST 3 IMAGES in your paper. These images should be used as examples that support your thesis statement and are analyzed from both formal and conceptual standpoints. What are you saying how do these images support your ideas? You should not choose images at random. They should be referenced in your paper because they play a substantial role in your thesis. What scholarly resources are you using to support your ideas? This should include the articles you found that related to your artists but also any in-class readings that you reference in your paper. Any additional research you end up doing should be referenced in your annotated bibliography as well. The body of your paper should be the longest and most substantial part. This is where you make your arguments and ideas heard all while referencing the scholarly resources that brought you there. Conclusion (Summarize your arguments) In a condensed version, take us back through your argument. WRITING THE ABSTRACT An abstract is a 250- to 300-word paragraph that provides readers with a quick overview of your essay and its organization (the research). It should express your thesis (or central idea) and your key points (images used); it should also suggest any conclusions you come to. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. http://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography

SOCIAL SCIENCE
Abstract
Art is a crucial aspect of design that entails the involvement of imagination and social skills in
the development of events. Artwork can be done through the traditional technique or modern.
Specifically, Photography is a form of fine art that involves the use of technology in capturing
images and creating vast analysis. This paper is mainly an analysis of Vivian Maier's artworks.
Maier was an outstanding photographer, and she had an incredible experience. A photograph is
usually a secret about a secret, and in the case of Maier, she was also a secret. From the 150s
until 2009, when she died, impoverished when she was eighty-three, Maier had taken over one
hundred and fifty thousand photographs. Interestingly, she had shown nobody those images.
Probably, this is suggesting that her desired themes were shooting her shadow. For years she

lived as a nanny, but her work was mainly capturing images. Also, as a Nanny, Maier developed
to be with people but not of the people, and as a result, most of her works were undeveloped
before she died. Mainly, her involvement created a change in her practices. Vivian has a personal
interest in photography for passion rather than for the audience. It is evident that Maier preferred
black-and-white images during this time, and her immense collection of unprinted and
undeveloped negatives continues to puzzle. However, she had abundant images that were
undeveloped since her piece of work was recognized after her death. Maier mainly focused on
color street photography, and her photographic work became a media sensation in late 2010.
