“By any criterion of citizenship we choose, the Japanese-Americans are better than any
other group in society,” these words from author William Pettersen were the initial spark to the
model minority label in the United States. The term model minority refers to a demographic
group based on concepts such as race, ethnicity, and religion that is viewed as having achieved
higher success compared to the population average (Atlee, 2001). The basis of this success is
measured by variants, including academic achievements, white-collar professional positions,
personal and family income. Also, social, economic indicators such as low criminality records
classify racial minorities. The model label has often been associated with Asian-Americans,
creating the notion that they are effortlessly productive, hardworking, and law-abiding citizens
compared to other minority groups such as Hispanics and African-Americans (Blackburn, 2019).
Such stereotyping often spread the belief that any racial minority can rise economically without
assistance from the government, external funding, or relative affirmative action. Although certain
groups, including several stereotype victims and politicians, have often utilized the label, recent
research proves that the model minority may merely be a myth and may cause more harm than
good. It is, therefore, essential to identify the bright side of the model minority concept as well as
its numerous contradictions.
Sociologists attempt to explain the essence of the model minority label as a value
addition to society while focusing on two points of view, including the dominant's and the
subordinate's advantage. In this case, the latter refers to Asian-Americans as a racial minority.
For instance, during the Civil Rights Movement, politicians debated against the AfricanAmericans’ efforts to fight for equal rights by using the Asian-American stereotype (Atlee,
