Abstract
The global weakening of democracy in the last quarter-century has seen an increased threat to
journalists. Even though journalists have contributed to democratic accountability and
protection of rights, they are facing increased killings. This paper will review Hughes &
Vorobyeva's (2019) article and present its findings regarding the deaths of journalists
between 1992 and 2016. In their study, Hughes & Vorobyeva (2019) used CPJ to test their
hypothesis to find the right results for the study. They also used online reports about
journalists from human rights groups and new sites to verify the collected data. The primary
research question for the article is identifying the reasons that result in the killings of
journalists in the current era and identifying the role of the current hybrid regimes and
subnational variations. Research findings show that more journalists, seventy-two percent,
have been murdered between 1992 and 2016. The hybrid political regimes are responsible for
most of the deaths of journalists in the past twenty-five years. Increased deaths of journalists
necessitate the development of the best ways to protect the journalists from the mysterious
deaths they are experiencing.
