When psychology was introduced after being separated from biology and
philosophy, the argument on how the human mind and behavior should be explained
started. This is when the two schools of psychology, the functionalism and the
structuralism, came up. Structuralism was the first school of psychology and it looked at
breaking down the mental processes into small most basic elements. In an effort to get
back to the ideas of structuralism, functionalism was formed. Functionalism tried to
explain the mental processes in a way that was more systematic and accurate
(Sternberg, 2019).
Wilhelm Wundt was a German and he came up with the psychology lab in the
year 1879. He was also the very first person to take up the title of psychologist and he is
associated with the structuralism school of thought which was officially established by
