Introduction
The selected theorist is Katharine Kolcaba. She is associated with the theory of comfort,
which she developed in the 1990s. Born and brought up in Cleveland, she attained a diploma in
nursing in 1965. For many years, working as a nurse, she practiced in different areas such as
long-term care, operating rooms, home care, and medical-surgical rooms. She later returned to
college to advance her career at a nursing school in Boston. In 1987, she had her first registered
nurse (RN) and a masters’ degree in nursing (MSN). She also received a specialty in gerontology
certificate from the Case Western Reserve University. While attending college, she practiced her
career as a head nurse. As a specialist and working in a dementia department, she developed an
interest in comfort and began theorizing it. After completing her second degree, she worked in
the department of gerontology and dementia at the University of Akron. She would later go back
to pursue a doctorate in nursing at the Case Western Reserve University. During her doctoral
studies, though she studied on a contract basis and teaching full-time, she utilized her course
materials to build her theory. Over the next years after 1990, she created a serious of works. In
1991, she published her first work ‘diagrammed the aspects of comfort.’ In 1992, she released
another work, which she titled ‘A Framework for Dementia Care.’ While the list of her
publications is long, she has earned an excellent reputation in the nursing field. Most of her
writings in her book, ‘Comfort theory and practice,’ demonstrate her extensive career and
achievements (Smith & Parker, 2015).
Now an associate professor, she has taught nursing at the University of Akron for over
two decades. She also instructs her web-based theory, though occasionally. As a consultant, she
often represented her firm on various occasions. In this level, as a veteran consultant, she works
