Background of Correctional Rehabilitation
For many years, rehabilitation has been considered to be the primary objective of the
correctional rehabilitation system. This objective is based on an assumption that people can be
treated successfully and then go back to a lifestyle devoid of crime. During the first half of the
twentieth century, rehabilitation was a fundamental feature of corrections. The appeal of
rehabilitation programming declined during the 1970s and 1980s. However, in recent years,
rehabilitation has regained favor. The concept of rehabilitation incorporates a wide range of
programs such as educational services, mental health, and substance abuse. Also, other specialty
programs have been introduced for parolees, sex offenders and women. Rehabilitation has also
been effectively incorporated into the court system.
The correctional rehabilitation model was started during the 1930s and later reached its
climax during the early 1950s. Under correctional rehabilitation, qualified personnel were
mandated to diagnose the primary cause of a person's criminal conduct, propose an effective
treatment to reform the person, and then determine when the person was ful...
