How can chirality effect the Useful yield of a reaction?
Jul 16th, 2014

A chiral molecule is a molecule that is the mirror image of the other molecule (or "enantiomer") If you synthesize a chiral chemical, you may have to discard half of your batch because it is the wrong mirror image, or wrong enantiomers. There is a 50% chance of a molecule ending up right handed instead of left-handed, for instance, in most chemical synthesis. Therefore, it affects the useful yield by reducing what is useful at the chemical plant.
