INTRODUCTION
• The native flower of Hawaii is scientifically known as Hibiscus brackenridgei (NPH, 2009).
• The locals in Hawaii refer to it as Ma’o Hau Hele.

• This native flower is only found in Hawaii, as it is part of the rare ecosystem that exists on
the island.
• I observed this flower while on holiday in Hawaii and it was one of the things about the
island that caught my eye.
• This was when I did some extra research about this beautiful flower.

WHY THIS ORGANISM?

• I chose this organism because it is one of the species
of living organisms that are only found in Hawaii so it
is a rare phenomenon.
• The hibiscus is also one of my favorite flowers so I was
happy to learn that different species of the genus
Hibiscus exist.

• This species of Hibiscus is endangered (NPH, 2009).

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
• Hibiscus brackenridgei grows into a small tree of up to 30 feet tall (HNPPD, 2001).
• However, it is common to find the height of this plant ranging from 3-15 feet tall and the
diameter ranging from 8-15 feet (HNPPD, 2001).
• When young, the trunks of this plant is smooth but it gets wrinkled as it gets older.
• The leaves of this plant have lobed or toothed edges which have either 3, 5, or 7 lobes.
They grow to a length and width of up to 6 inches (HNPPD, 2001).
