Background and Facts
Since the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010, also known as Obamacare,
many politicians, including President Trump, have challenged its constitutionality. The Act was
meant to revolutionize the way America delivers its healthcare to the people. One of the most
recent challenges that the bill faced was when the Federal Appeals Ccourt ruled that the
individual mandate of Obamacare is unconstitutional in December 2019 (Goodnough, 2019).
The ruling presented a significant setback on the law and the entire healthcare reforms that the
country has been trying to achieve. In the fall of 2020, the law will be on trial in the supreme
court to determine if some parts of it will survive, or whether the entire law will be regarded to
be invalid (Liptak & Goodnough, 2020). It is a major threat considering the effort put by
President Obama to increase the health insurance coverage for all Americans.
Obamacare remains an essential part of the US healthcare system as it provides many
benefits. Even though the law has various challenges, it is crucial to understand that it has played
a significant role in boosting insurance coverage for millions of Americans as the statistics have
continued to prove. Since 2010, statistics show that more than 20 million Americans have been
covered under the ACA. Additionally, more than 57 million disabled Americans and senior
citizens have enrolled due to the low premiums, cost-sharing, and deductibles. Invalidation of
this law by the Supreme Court of the United States will mean that many Americans will end up
missing out on health insurance, and this can have far-reaching implications on the long-term
sustainability of the country’s healthcare system. It is important to weigh both the benefits and
the costs that come with Obamacare so as to have some concrete understanding of the kind of

defenses that can be embraced in an attempt to the save the law from those who are hell-bent on
seeing its death.
The Perspective of the Supporters
The supporters of Obamacare cite various benefits that have been achieved from the law
so far, and they also point out that the best is yet to come. Firstly, Obamacare increases
Americans' access to healthcare through subsidies that end up lowering the cost of health
insurance. The act provides premium tax credits to low-income households whose income ...
