Desperate times demand desperate responses. However, while euthanasia comes in handy
in some situations where desperation has knocked upon the doors of human beings, the issue
elicits heated debates and controversies from both supporters and those against it. In the recent
past, arguments in support of assisted suicide have received criticism from a wide array of
groups, including religious groups and some other conservative organizations. As a result, it has
become increasingly necessary to explore the issue more incisively so as to come up with a more
concrete understanding of its importance to society, as well as its negative implications.
Currently, there are a few states in the United States, such as California, Oregon, Vermont,
among others, that have made euthanasia legal. In other states like Alaska and New York, the
procedure is still considered illegal, and this denies many terminally ill patients a right to assisted
suicide. Considering that suffering and pain are some of the most devastating issues that come
along with many illnesses, allowing people to make a choice regarding assisted suicide should be
permissible and legal. Most specifically, when it comes to an individual with a terminal illness
that has exhausted all efforts and is in a terrible state of health with no hope for being able to live
