Sikh Religion
The word Sikh can be translated to disciple or a learner. Sikh is one of the religions that
believe in the oneness of god and this religion and philosophy originated in Punjab, India in the
15th century by Guru Nanak (Macauliffe, 2013). Their teachings are covered in their holy book
known as Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Members who subscribe to its teachings are referred to as the
Sikhs.
Relationship between Sikhism and other religions
Sikhism draws its elements from Islam and Hinduism religions. It is sometimes referred
to as the religion between Islam and Hinduism (Macauliffe, 2013). Both Islam and Hinduism are
older religions as compared to Sikhism as it is one of the youngest religions.
Both Sikhism and Islam are monotheistic (Singh, 2012). They are characterized by the
belief that there is only one God. Islam believes that there is none to be worshipped but Allah
(S.W.T) and Muhammad (S.A.W) is his prophet. The belief of Sikhism is anchored in the
meditation on the name of the sole creator, divine unity and also believes that all humankind is
equal regardless of race, religion or societal status. Just like Islam, Sikhism also believes in
justice and honesty for all for the benefit of peaceful co-existence.
Sikhism and Islam do not support the issue of idol worshipping. The teachings of Sikh
Gurus prohibit idol worshipping. In their Gurdwara, the place they use to worship, there are no
any statues, idols or pictures because the religion believes in the oneness of God and they also
believe that God has no physical form. In one of their narratives, during his pilgrimages, it is
reported that Guru Nanak mocked religious rituals and idol worshipping (Singh, 2012). The
