A folkway is an everyday behavior, but one that does not have a serious consequence if broken. A folkway growing up in my family was sitting down together as a family every night for dinner. We did this no matter what and without the TV on. I remember one night my mom was working out of town and my dad was in charge and told us that we could just watch the basketball game in the kitchen with him that night at dinner. As a preteen to me this was a great, fun thing, but I knew it was out of my normal behavior. I ended up spilling the beans to my mom later on, but she just laughed and said don't do it again. It became a joke in our house where when mom was out of town we watched TV with dinner, but not when she was home. Today, I still follow the folkway of a sit down family dinner with my own family. When something happens and this is not possible I feel out of sorts because it has become a part of who I am.
