Provisional Design Plan for Your Evaluative Book Review Project (Q&A format required)

  1. Write a one-sentence description of your interpretation of Colvin’s main purpose or goal in writing Humans are Underrated: What High Achievers Know that Brilliant Machines Never Will.
  2. What are you trying to achieve in your review of Colvin’s book? What motivates this review for you personally? Are you recommending this book to others? Why or why not?
  3. What did you find convincing, interesting, surprising, well written, confusing, revealing, and debatable, etc. in Colvin’s book?
  4. Describe your strategy in terms of how you are situating your review’s introduction within the larger cultural and economic context in which the book is circulating and in which we live, learn, and work.
  5. How are you approaching the review and who is your target audience? What do you want your audience to think and feel after they read your review? What information about the book do you think will capture and keep your target audience’s attention? How can the review be developed in ways that connect with the readers’ interests and strengthen the overall review?
  6. How effectively do the body paragraphs nutshell the arguments of the book and selectively use quotes and specifics on key concepts and claims? How are you organizing your review? With body paragraphs summarizing the chapters, each followed by a reaction or as a summary of the whole book followed by a lengthier reaction to it?
  7. How well does the introduction set up a context that relates Colvin’s interests to the interests of authors such as Keith Sawyer, Elizabeth Stone, Nicholas Christakis, James Fowler, and/or David Gauntlett and then to the line of approach you developed in the review?
  8. How will you test the effectiveness of your review with an actual audience so that you can revise it? To whom can you show your review that will offer you suggestions for revision? Name at least one person or support service, for example a consultant at the UA Think Tank or a relative or friend, with whom you plan to meet about your book review project (that is both your review and you reflective cover memo) to assess its overall effectiveness.
  9. Describe where you are currently in terms of the process of crafting your review of Colvin’s book (brainstorming, drafting, researching, focusing, organizing, developing, editing, polishing, revising, etc.).

There are basically 2 things you are doing in the book review: 1) intelligently summarizing Colvin's book and 2) providing your analysis and reaction. With the summary, you are providing facts. With the analysis, you are interpreting those facts based on your opinion.

Thinking Through Production of Your Reflective Cover Memo (Q&A format required)

  1. Describe the challenges you have encountered so far in terms of locating and gleaning insight from model published reviews. What book reviews have you found to be the most helpful to you as models and why are these models so helpful? What about them stands out to you as worthy of emulation?
  2. What venue have you selected as your target for your published review of Colvin’s book? What are the venue’s submission guidelines and do you plan to actually submit your review for publication?
  3. What is the single most important aspect of your reflective cover memo that you need to work on developing next? For example, how strong is your abstract? When will you work on this aspect of your reflective cover memo and how long do you think it will take to accomplish the next phase of the project

A: Colvin's purpose is simple and very much helpful. Instead of diving deep into the debate
either the machines will boost up our abilities in the future or they will overrule us in the
future. The author points out the core abilities that make us unique makes us human (Sawyer,
2017).

A: The purpose of my review is to enlighten the core though of the author about not
predicting the future instead of adopting new skills which will differentiate us from the
machines. The author sets up a view for the future where various types of new jobs are
available, but they are recovered for them who are eager to learn a new set of skills (Colvin,
2016). I think this part is the motivation for my review. Yes, I will recommend this book to
others because it gives a clear perspective on not predicting the future but to build your own
self for the future.

A: Chapter seven seems to be the convincing part where the author gives an excellent
overview of teamwork. The interesting part is where the author introduced various new job
fields shortly. The surprising part will be the tenth chapter, where the author talks about the
difference between women and men and ask, "is it a ...
