Description

1. Self-Assessments:

  1. Please list your current career goals in terms of the fields(s) you want to be in and the kinds of positions you think right now that you would like to have over the next 3 to 5 years. (i want to do something HR related)
  1. Based on Satterthwaite & Millard’s Can-Do Spirit VITALS Checkup Self-Assessment, pp 123-6:

List what you think might be your most powerful motivators and de-motivators that you should be aware of when making future career and job decisions.

(most powerful motivators: 1) Values refers to the standards or principles that a person believes are important to uphold in life, which could include things like trustworthiness, loyalty, fairness, and beliefs. 2) Talents refer not only to strong skills that a person may have developed, but also to the underlying ability or aptitude that makes it possible for someone to develop a noteworthy skill. 3) Aspirations are the ambitions that a person has—what this person wants to be and achieve in the future.

de-motivators: 1)Interests are the particular work-related subject areas that grab and hold a person’s attention. 2)Longings are the nagging (when not sufficiently satisfied) psychological needs that people bring to the workplace. This includes things like a fondness for stability and predictability, a desire for personal achievement, a continuing need for close personal relationships at work, a strong desire to be held in high esteem by colleagues, or a desire to be in charge or in control.

2. “Answers & Questions” from Readings:

Daft Chapter 3

Pick at least one leadership strategy and briefly answer the following questions:

( Telling style: Refers a high-task, low-relationship style wherein the leader gives explicit directions and supervises work closely. This style is geared toward low maturity followers.)

  1. In what types of situations would this leadership strategy be likely to work well for you? And in what types of situations might this strategy be unlikely to work very well for you? Why?
  1. Given your personal background, would some of the points made regarding this leadership strategy need to be changed to work well in a particular national or organizational culture where you might want to use this strategy? If yes, what adjustments might you need to make? ( I had some hotel internship where I work at housekeeping and front-desk)
  1. What further questions do you have about leadership strategies after reading this chapter?

Daft Chapter 4

  1. What are some specific things that you learned about yourself from reading this chapter and doing the Self-Insights that you could make use of now or in the future?

(chapter 4 is mainly talks about personality and leadership, the self-insighs I did is at Quadrant C, which can be described as friendly, receptive, enthusiastic, understanding, expressive, empathetic, trusting, sensitive, passionate, humanistic.

Quadrant C,is associated with interpersonal relationships and affects intuitive

and emotional thought processes. C-quadrant individuals are sensitive to others and

enjoy interacting with and teaching others; hence this might be considered the

‘‘teacher’’ part of the brain.56 These people are typically emotional and expressive,

outgoing, and supportive of others. Leaders with a predominantly quadrant-C style

are friendly, trusting, and empathetic. They are concerned with people’s feelings

more than with tasks and procedures and may put emphasis on employee development and training.

Daft Chapter 5

  1. What are some specific things that you learned about yourself from reading this chapter and doing the Self-Insights that you could make use of now or in the future?

(chapter 5 is about leadership and emotion, like Effective leaders strive to keep open minds and cultivate an organizational environment that encourages curiosity and learning. They understand the limitations of past experience and reach out for diverse perspectives. Rather than seeing any questioning of their ideas as a threat, these leaders encourage everyone to openly debate assumptions, confront paradoxes, question perceptions, and express feelings.)

3. Presentations & Discussions From Previous Class:

Reflect on the issues and strategies discussed during the last class and briefly answer the following question:

  1. Given your current career plans, were there any issues and/or strategies discussed during class that you feel might be particularly useful for you to know more about? If yes, what were they and why might they be important?

4. Personal Experience

  1. Have you made any personal use recently of things you have learned in this course?
  1. If yes, what did you do and how is it working out for you?

5. Term Paper Research

  1. Describe in several sentences what topic(s) you might want to explore for the term paper you will do for this course.
  1. As you begin to do research for your topic(s) what areas might you need help with?

(the topic i want to talk about is how personality can affect leadership)

6. Anything Else?
