TCP/IP and the OSI models are the two widely used networking models that are applied in
communication. One major difference between the two is that OSI is known to more conceptual
than a practical model and is not widely used in communication while the other model is used for
the establishment of connection and communication through the networks. The OSI models
emphasize services and protocols (Piscitello & Chapin, 2019). While TCP cannot clearly
distinguish between the protocols. TCP allows connectionless communication mode in the network
layer, at the same time both modes have both connections oriented and connectionless protocols in
the transport layer. Another difference is that there is an OSI layer uses a horizontal approach to
networking while TCP/IP uses a vertical approach (Rose, 2018). OSI is therefore not a protocol but
a benchmark for other protocols.
