Discussion 1. For this discussion, address the following points based on the reading assigned for this week. In your initial post: • • • • Analyze whether poverty is a cause of poor health in a community or whether poor health is a cause of poverty. Analyze some of the health issues found in a community of lower-socioeconomic status as well as the health issues found in communities of higher socioeconomic status. Discuss the differences and similarities between the issues found in both communities. Utilize at least two scholarly sources, in addition to the course text, to support your points. 2. Part I: • • Describe which currently has the largest impact on the nation's health: infectious diseases or chronic diseases? Explain your response using epidemiological measures and supportive evidence from academic research. Part II: • • Analyze how public health upholds individual rights while protecting societal rights through prevention strategies of both types of diseases (e.g., adding fluoride to the water to reduce dental carries). Discuss the ethical issues associated with the role of public health in protecting societal rights as well as individual rights. Utilize at least two scholarly sources (one could be the textbook) to support your points. 2b. Applying Epidemiology Epidemiology is the study of epidemics. More specifically, it is the study of the occurrence and distribution of health problems. Using any of the epidemiological techniques outlined in the chapters from this week’s reading, address the questions for one of the case studies outlined below. • • Epidemiological Case #1: Gastroenteritis at a University in Texas Epidemiological Case #2: Norovirus in Vermont There are two parts to this assignment: Part I: Provide a brief statement of the investigative issue. Describe the epidemiological steps you would take by addressing the questions asked within the case study you select. Part II: Address the questions noted at the end of your selected case study. Your paper should be at least four pages in length, but can exceed this depending on how much detail you provide on the epidemiological steps you take for your case. You should use at least one additional scholarly source in addition to the textbook. Format your paper and all citations according to APA style 3. Essential Services Personal Interview Select a population (maternal, infant, child, adolescent, young adults, older adults, elderly) and research the most critical health issues affecting this population. • • • Describe the most critical health issues affecting your selected population. Describe at least three public health/community services that exist in your own community to address these issues. Contact one of these services’ directors (or representative) and inquire about the agency’s effectiveness by asking these questions: o o o o o o • • Do you feel your organization has made a difference? What are your main barriers and how are the barriers to services being addressed? What are the ethical considerations of your services and how are they addressed? How is your organization funded? What concerns are still unmet in your opinion? Are these areas that will be addressed in the future? What role does your organization play in the overall public health arena? Present a brief overview of the organization, including its mission and goals/objectives, and then post your interview notes in the discussion forum Your original post must contain at least one additional scholarly source in addition to the textbook. 3b. Based on your interview notes from this week’s discussion activity, analyze the epidemiological data surrounding the health issue that your agency addresses. Compare the epidemiological data with the information provided by the agency director/representative by addressing the following points: • • • • How do the epidemiological data and the information provided by the agency director/representative differ? How are they similar? Based on the epidemiological information collected, what is the true effect that the agency is having on your community? Appraise the various methods that should be employed to help the agency improve its effectiveness. Analyze the 10 Essential Services of Public Health and how they are (or are not) wrapped into the service provided by this agency. Epidemiological data consists of statistical information on your population obtained through primary sources, which are typically research studies or government survey information (such as those provided by the CDC or health department). Utilize the Ashford University Library and/or government websites to locate statistics that relate to your organization. For example, if you interviewed someone from an organization that focused on childhood obesity, you would locate research studies that provided statistical results for your county, region, or state to illustrate what was actually occurring in your area regarding childhood obesity. Once you have this data, compare it with the information provided by the agency director or representative that you interviewed. In some cases, you may only be able to find actual state statistics, but your organization may have provided only local data. This is okay; just make sure you note this in your paper and through critical thinking, infer how this might influence the effectiveness of your organization’s work. Your paper should be three to four pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and formatted according to APA style guidelines 4. Debate: Is Health Care a Right or a Privilege? ( I NEED TO WAIT TO SEE WHICH DEBATE TEAM THE PROFESSOR ASSIGNS, I WILL LET YOU KNOW ONCE ASSIGNED.) Your instructor will divide the class into to different debate teams. You will be responsible for composing your own initial debate post and for making the required number of responses to classmates on the other side of the debate. Note: There are two different discussion topic threads, your initial post will occur within the debate forum assigned to your team below, however your responses to peers will occur within the other debate forum. • Debate Team 1: Health Care is a Right. You will present an argument that health care is a right via a substantial post in this discussion. You must use at least three scholarly sources, one of which can be the textbook, in providing evidence that supports this argument. o Responses to Team 2: You will post a rebuttal against two of your classmates who were on Team 2. Read through the posts and then refute two of your classmates’ arguments that health care is a privilege. Refer to elements in their original post as you rebut their points. • Debate Team 2: Health Care is a Privilege. You will present an argument that health care is a privilege via a substantial post in this discussion. You must use at least three scholarly sources, one of which can be the textbook, in providing evidence that supports this argument. o Responses to Team 1: You will post a rebuttal against two of your classmates who were on Team 1. Read through the posts and then refute two of your classmates’ arguments that health care is a right. Refer to elements in their original post as you rebut their points. 4b. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act was approved by Congress and will be phased in over several years. However, the argument remains as to the law’s appropriateness in a democratic nation such as the United States. In a substantial post, you will examine whether the ACA is or is not an appropriate law for the United States. You must include critical information about the law that is currently under debate such as quality, cost, access, technology, health care system structure, global effect, rationing, government versus private oversight, and so on. At least two scholarly sources are required to support your opinion. Please refrain from using news reports on the topic, as these are not scholarly sources. 5. See attachment for scenario Imagine you are the director of FEMA using NIMS when this disaster occurs. • Review the steps you would take to resolve the issue including how you would follow the appropriate protocols, your understanding of the ethical and legal responsibilities involved, as well as the potential limitations. These aspects are outlined in your textbook and required reading. • Develop a YouTube video that informs the population of what will be done to resolve the issue. Address these elements in your video: o Describe the nature of the situation. o Explain what FEMA and others are doing to mitigate the situation. o Explain what people need to do to stay safe and/or to get help in order to reduce panic. Your vocal tone should be one that is meant to reduce panic and provide a solid explanation of the above elements. You will present your announcement as a YouTube video. Review the YouTube Webcam QuickStart Guide for instructions on how to create a YouTube account and YouTube video using your computer’s webcam and microphone. Copy and paste the URL to your video within your discussion forum response. If you are unable to create a YouTube video for this discussion, you may use a screencast program. However, you do not need to develop a PowerPoint presentation. This discussion is meant to assess your communication abilities, therefore, the audio portion of the video and/or screencast is essential. If you elect to use the screencast option, you may simply use a picture of yourself reporting the above information in lieu of a PowerPoint. • • Questions to think about while formulating your response to the public: • • • • • • • • • • • Emphasize order of operations. What are the issues you will address first? Which organization is responsible for what? Where will you allocate your resources? How will you delegate responsibility? How will you coordinate with state, local and federal agencies? How does communication and information flow? How have you prepared for these types of emergencies? How will you respond to these disasters? What will the recovery look like? What public health concerns are the results of each of these events? Which populations might be most at risk? What are some of the long-term health effects of these events? What other health concerns may arise from these events? What will you say to the people, who are desperately awaiting your direction? Include an organizational diagram of the response plan for the disaster including: o A description of the roles and responsibilities of each organization in the response team o The flow of communication between these organizations 5b. Final Project Imagine that you work for a health department and have been asked to make a presentation to a group of health care professionals on the role and responsibilities of community and public health. After reviewing the materials throughout the course and based on what you have learned, create a PowerPoint presentation of at least six slides that covers the following topics: • • • • • Describe the role of community and public health in the well-being of populations. Describe the public health organizational structure. Examine the legal and ethical dimensions of public and community health services. Analyze funding of public and community health services. Discuss the role of communication in community and public health programs. Creating the Final The Final Presentation: 1. Must be created using a screencast program such as Jing, Screencast-O-Matic, Screenr, or other audio/video program. 2. Must be a minimum of six PowerPoint slides in length (excluding title and reference slide), and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. 3. Must include a title slide with the following: o Title of presentation o Student’s name o Course name and number o Instructor’s name o Date submitted 4. Must include a succinct thesis that is presented on the opening slide. 5. Must address the topics with critical thought. 6. Must use at least four scholarly sources (not including the course text), including a minimum of two from academic journals found in the Ashford University Library. Other sources should be obtained from appropriate epidemiological information. 7. Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. 8.
