1) There is no apparent racial or ethnic diversity among the characters. In contrast with the author, note that all the names seem to be fairly common names for English speakers. What do you make of this? Tie your response in to the setting of the story.

Do you agree with Ruth that Madame is afraid of the students? What might be behind her
behavior?
Yes, Madame had a physical fear of being near the students, which perplexes Kathy,
Ruth, and others. Madame developed a feeling of the students being inferior from them despite
frequent visits to Hailsham to take away the best student artworks into her gallery. This behavior
is associated with Madame’s attitude of being distant and cold to the students. Madame finds the
students as repulsive because of less interaction with them. The behavior is further explained by
