Euthanasia refers to the practice of terminating the life of persons with intolerable
suffering from critical illnesses or conditions. Belgium and Netherlands were the first states in
history to legitimize euthanasia. However, more current laws in countries such as California are
embracing the idea of euthanasia, mainly due to the unbearable suffering experienced by
patients. Nonetheless, these laws differ from each state based on the requirements and
procedures to follow in obtaining an authorized lethal drug. In my opinion, euthanasia refers to
the intentional action of a doctor terminating life of an individual upon their request or that of a
family member. Euthanasia is often conducted with the aim of relieving pain or suffering from
the patient (Paterson, 2017). It can be undertaken in two forms, either through withholding a
patient's life-sustaining treatments or use of lethal injections. However, despite the technique
applied, euthanasia can be voluntary whereby a patient gives consent. Also, euthanasia can be
done non-voluntary whereby a patient is unable to give consent due to their deteriorating health
condition; hence a different party decides to end life on behalf of the patient.
Difference between the Types of Euthanasia
Passive euthanasia involves the act of allowing a patient to die according to the specified
conditions which are authorized by the government. On the other hand, active euthanasia entails
the decision of a physician to intentionally cause death to a patient due to their great suffering.
