Social interaction
Social interaction is a building block of societal development and existence. It entails the
dynamic changes in social actions within society either between individuals or social groups.
Social interaction is modified depending on the participants and the existing situations. Social
interactions form the basis of social structure and are thus important in social analyses and
inquiries. The study of social interaction forms apart of micro-sociology which is more
concerned with the daily human social interactions on the smallest scale possible. Various
theories as the ethnomethodology and symbolic interactionism theories have been greatly used in
the study of human interactions at the small scales. Plays and theatric performances can also help
in the understanding of human social interaction because they tend to imitate the daily life
experiences of humans within society. Dramaturgy theory and impression management are such
methods that are normally evident in plays and theatric performances that can best help in
understanding social interactions (Argyle, 2017).
Face-to-face interaction is the most familiar and recognizable form of social interaction.
However, plays and theatric performances can also help in understanding the aspects of social
interactions. Dramaturgy is a sociological theory that tries to explain the daily life by employing
theatric aspects. Goffman in this theory tries to explain human life by comparing human life and
theater. He drew comparisons between humans and actors on stage in a theatre. The theory
attempts to explain how order and orderliness in a theatric show are achieved by questioning
how performance is enacted and the symbols that are used in a theatre to achieve the desired
