Maryland Neurobiological Perspective on Early Adversity of Parenting Discussion

Question Description

I’m working on a Social Science question and need guidance to help me study.

1) The first parenting style that I agree with the most is authoritative parenting. Setting a clear standard for your child to follow along with explaining to them the reasoning behind the expectations. This style of parenting also has a positive line of communication between the parent and child. The second parenting style that I would agree with is permissive parenting. I agree with the sense of allowing the child to make some decisions. I like the ideal of first letting the child try to figure something out and for the parent to provide help and guide them. If I had to disagree with one of the parenting styles it would be is uninvolved parenting. I understand that parenting is a hard responsibility but, it is a responsibility. A child should be guided and without the care from a parental figure, they will rebel and find that figure somewhere else. This is often how young men are introduced into crime or other unsafe habits.

2) The parenting styles that I would say I agree with most are evolutionary psychology and human behavioral genetics theories. I find the science behind parenting and the evolutionary idea presented in our reading that parental investment is due to 'the amount of shared genetic material, the child's likelihood of survival and the future likelihood the child will have children' is very interesting (Holden, 2009). Additionally, understanding how a parent's genes can passively, actively or evocatively can influence or children's development and environment is important. Genetics affect so much of how our children are going to behave even before they are exposed to other environments and situations (Holden, 2009). I would say the theory I agree with the least would be role theory. In today's world, males and females can assume many roles in parenting and I don't believe that that has a drastic effect on the child's behaviors and upbringing.

Hello,

Authoritative parenting style, as you have mentioned, is a parenting style that is characterized by
a high level of responsiveness and high demands. Authoritative parents can inculcate responsible
behaviors among their children and are also responsive to their children’s emotional and
psychological needs while embracing high standards of responsibilit...
