Characteristics of Successful Relationships
The aspects of successful relationships by Carl Rogers are based upon the personcentered theory of personality. According to this theory, both awareness and self-actualization
are of utmost significance. This can be explained to mean that people who are aware of
themselves and are self-actualized would not allow themselves to be in miserable and unhealthy
relationships. Typically, persons in their right state of mind tend to be attracted by a person in a
similar state, thus get involved in loving and healthy relationships. Carl Rogers observed that
people are aware of their ideal self and their self-concept and that people tend to experience
awareness on three levels (McLeod, 2014). The levels are congruence, acceptance and
unconditional positive regard and empathic understanding.
From the levels mentioned above, the characteristics of healthy relationships are
manifested. The five characteristics include open communication, honesty, rhythm, sensitivity
and respect for autonomy. Communication is a critical aspect of everyday life (Lavner, Karney &
Bradbury, 2016). Communication brings people together and unifies those people with similar
ideologies and perspectives on different aspects of life. People who are open up during
conversations tend to reveal their vulnerabilities, and this makes them be understood well by
another person. Open communication, according to Carl Rogers, helps people in relationships to
understand the thoughts and feelings of another person. Being open with partners in relationships
creates a sense of honesty, trust and healthy bonds (Lavner, Karney & Bradbury, 2016). Open
