The evidence is his incessant fight against counterfeit product listings and leveraging on big data to differentiate between credible and dishonest product sellers. These principles have impacted his organization’s culture and led to financial success and earned the trust of many consumers. Building Trusting Partnerships Ma builds trusting partnerships that ensure successful collaboration and performance by establishing a sustainable business culture. He hires highly skilled persons and empowers future generations. Even when criticized, Ma is humble. It is this humble leadership style that is extended even in recruiting top talent. He is also democratic and allows employees to pass judgment on their products. He is a leader who wants to make a positive impact in the world. Another leader who wants to change the world is Elon Musk. While Musk is sophisticated, Ma is extraordinary because he is simple, direct and authentic. Principles and Values Ma came from a humble background and was an English teacher and translator, but did not let his humble beginning stop him from daring to dream. His tenacity made Alibaba a household global e-commerce platform. He is the brains behind the biennial “Global Conference on Women and Entrepreneurship”. By promoting diversity, Ma has worked with people from diverse backgrounds who offer diverse perspectives, skill sets, and approaches to solving problems. Response to Challenges Yun Ma has faced many challenges while running his organization. In 2011, low-level employees set up fraudulent accounts and certified the fraudsters as real gold merchants. To win back the trust of consumers, Ma ordered the immediate firing of at least 100 sales persons (Epstein, 2011). He showed that he is committed to integrity and decisive when it comes to customer protection. Results Alibaba has enjoyed immense growth and financial success since it was established. Alibaba made a public stock offering at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2014, it raised a record-breaking $25 billion ("Jack Ma Profile", 2020). It is his values in leadership that made many investors to trust his business model. Ma is a passionate advocate for equality and diversity at the workplace. Personal Perspective and Follow-up Yun Ma is an extraordinary leader because of his approach and the magnitude of the impact his leadership has had on the global e-commerce industry. The analysis of Ma’s leadership is critical to my development as a leader. Ma’s style is charismatic, visionary and transformational. As a future leader, Ma has inspired the adoption of a leadership approach that empowers the consumers, the employees, and other stakeholders which contributing to the greater good of society. It is something that should be cultivated in an organization’s culture and implemented at every level to become a successful leader like Ma. Today’s global leaders need to have global intelligence. It is a quality that can determine whether a company succeeds or fails as embracing global diversity is inevitable in our modern world. Yun Ma’s Brief Background and Key Events
Yun Ma is a Chinese business mogul and an exceptional leader. The entrepreneur cofounded the Alibaba Group where he served as the executive chairman, before retiring in 2019
(Forbes, 2020). Alibaba Group is a multinational technology corporation. Yun Ma also has a
stake in Alipay; an e-payment portal. Currently, Yun Ma's net worth of $25 billion makes him
the richest man in China and a successful entrepreneur (Forbes, 2020).
Yun Ma had a tumultuous upbringing. He grew up in a poor household. However, Yun
Ma's events as he grew up informs who he is today (Zhou, Kim, & Rui, 2019). He had to repeat
his primary school exams two times for failing to pass. Similarly, he repeated his middle school
exams three times. In addition, he failed university entrance exams three times. Yun Ma got
accepted to Hangzhou Normal University but rejected from Harvard University 10 times. It is
evident that Yun Ma learned how to accept and deal with failure from an early age. He grew
persistent by seeing and pursuing opportunities until he was able to get the final objective. His
career-life has been similarly tumultuous as his school life. He failed 30 job interviews (Zhou,
Kim, & Rui, 2019). Out of 24 potential job candidates at a new KFC outlet, 23 were employed
and he was the only one rejected. Yun Ma even rejected from joining the police force four times.
Yun Ma's charismatic behavior of refusing to give up in the face of adversity is a manifestation
of the traits that define a successful and visionary leader. This paper illustrates the exceptional
leadership approach Ma has adopted that has differentiated him from other modern leaders.

remarkable success he has achieved in his career. Ma is a restless visionary. These principles
have impacted his organization’s culture and led to financial success and earned the trust of
