Introduction

With the advancement in technology in this modern era, there has been an increase in the
uptake of smart home devices. The smart home devices are changing the home landscape by
bringing about automation, which makes it easier for the user to navigate through various
products (Shouran, Ashari, & Kuntoro, 2019). There are various smart home devices depending
on the budget that one wants to spend. However, an important area of concern is the security and
privacy of using smart home devices.

The innovation of the internet has proved to be a game-changer in the technology
industry. The internet has made many things that seemed impossible to be easily accomplished.
It has provided a good platform via which communication between people and devices can take
place. Smart home devices utilize the internet to be able to communicate with each other hence
offering the user easy access to perform various tasks in the home (Lin & Bergmann, 2016).
Furthermore, the devices make it easier for direct and remote access by the user.

Further advancement has led to the development of smart home devices with real-time
monitoring. With adequate programming, these devices are able to execute commands even
without the input of the user by following preset commands (Arabo, Brown, & El-Moussa,
2012). The smart environments created to lead to the creation of a huge amount of data. The term
the Internet of Things (IoT) has gotten significance as it describes the things connected to the
internet, such as smart home devices.

However, the biggest issue arising from the Internet of Things is the security and privacy
risks that are associated with smart home systems. The data collected by the smart home devices

are at a potential risk of being hacked or accessed without authorization and in the process
contravene privacy of the users (Anscombe et al., 2017). Additionally, some of the home
devices, such as cameras, can be used in an illegal way to breach privacy.

Smart Homes
There are very few fully smart homes because of the huge initial cost of setting up the
technology needed. However, there are houses with smart devices that are well interconnected
using the internet (Usha & Bobby, 2018). The devices include cameras, sensors, scanners,
amongst other devices aimed at controlling the smart environment. The Internet of Things is
used in smart homes to ensure the effective connectivity and operability of the devices therein.
The networking of devices ensures that there is a ubiquitous nature in operations for people using
the functionalities.
The main challenge with the IoT is how information is handled. For effective
