Abstract
Technology improvement has become ubiquitous to contemporary society and has
also impacted the transportation industry immensely. Technology trends have introduced
more convenient, faster, safer, and personalized means of transportation hence improving
luxury and economic benefits in transportation sector. Environmentally-friendly
transportation, electronic payments, shorter transportation times, and the chatbots are just a
few of the new technologies that are making transportation more convenient and developed.
However, few researchers have looked into the social impact of new technology in the
transportation sector. This paper looks at several categories of new technology in
transportation, how they work, and societal impact of the same. Specifically, it looks into
autonomous vehicles and drones, hyperloop and high-speed trains, and flying taxis to present
the societal impact and the way forward for this technology.
Literature Review
Current literature has focused much on the Internet of Things and its effects on
transportation with the main benefits being the interconnected vehicles. Research by Datta,
Da Costa, Härri, and Bonnet (1) focused on the challenges that vehicles using IoT may be
facing. The researchers show that the use of the cloud is unreliable, description and collection
of data is non-uniform, and the integration of smart devices into transport systems remains a
challenge (1). Although the researchers advanced a novel system to address these issues in
the transportation sector, the challenges remain to be diverse in the IoT utilization for
transportation services. In the same field, Mehmood and colleagues (2) try to map out the
place of transportation systems in the smart city model suggested by technological
advancements. Smart transportation is thus placed under ‘offered services’ by smart city
proprietors alongside healthcare, smart energy, waste management, among others. However,

3
for this new technology to work, it requires the development of communication protocols,
traffic modelling, and interoperability (2).
Another area of interest that has received a lot of attention from scholars and
researchers is the area of drones and driverless cars and most research focuses on prospects as
well as safety of this technology. Starting with the safety bit, Aristotle Wolfe (3) has looked
at the implications of having driverless cars which do not need traffic police stops. He points
