predictors of continued community engagement. Educational Psychology, 33(3), 314333. doi: 10.1080/01443410.2013.772775
The aim of this research was to study factors that predictive whether a person exposed to
community engagement activities as a young person would report engagement as a young adult.
The researchers conceptualized this continued participation in volunteerism as a sign of a sense
of purpose surrounding community participation. The authors found that continued engagement
was most probable among persons that engaged in a mix of voluntary and mandatory
community-based civic activities as a young person as well as those that were involved in any of
several forms of extracurricular activities. Other key factors that the authors linked to continued
participation in community engagement in adulthood include religiosity, sense of belonging in
school, achievement, having parents committed to civic activities.
This article is important because it provide important information into the factors that
predict continued community engagement among young people such as students in later years.
This information can be applied in cultivating a future of volunteerism and community and civic
and community engagement by promoting voluntary and mandatory community-based civic
activities among students and young people.
