Question Description

Issues in Antipsychotic Treatment

Antipsychotic medications have low compliance due to both the medication itself (side effects) and the patient population. Many patients on antipsychotics are homeless, which confounds treatment. In addition, many self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, which further increases potential side effects and decreases compliance.

For this Discussion, consider issues involved with treating patients with psychotic disorders. Specifically, consider the following questions:

  • Is “the cure” worse than the disease?
  • Are antipsychotics effective?
  • Should antipsychotics be used, or should alternative treatments be explored?
  • Are the atypical (2nd generation) antipsychotics genuinely better or more effective than the 1st generation meds?

Consider other possible ways of treating schizophrenia without the aid of antipsychotics (especially 1st generation).

Submit by Day 4 an analysis of your thoughts on treating patients with schizophrenia and other psychoses. In your analysis, explain 1st and 2nd generation antipsychotics and the differences between them. Finally, evaluate the side effects of antipsychotics and how they can be managed or mitigated.

Support your position with specific references to the Learning Resources and any additional references you used.

Issues in Antipsychotic Treatment

these drugs remain high, which challenges the treatment outcomes on the patients. The
primary reason which makes people argue that these drugs are worse than the disease is the
effects brought about in the end. There are many challenges which affect the treatment of
psychotic conditions. For instance, one of the main problems which revolve such
interventions is the increased side effects. Some of the most common side effects include
constipation, blurred vision and dry mouth. At some point, these drugs bring about weight
gain, weakness and sleeping problems (Advokat, & Comaty & Julien, 2019). Other issues
which are associated with such treatments and medications include the nature of the target
populations. For instance, the majority of these parties are usually homeless and addicts of
the various conditions such as alcohol and drugs.
Some people have argued that antipsychotic drugs are not sufficient. However, these
drugs play a crucial role in the management of their respective conditions. Other than the
