The Mayor of a large city was given a free membership in an exclusive golf club by people
who have received several city contracts. He also accepted gifts from organizations that
have not done business with the City but might in the future. The gifts ranged from $200
tickets to professional sports events to designer watches and jewelry.
Well, I feel that for the Mayor accepting the gifts either parties is a kind of a trap which the Mayor
is being lured into. Although accepting the gifts is not illegal, it is however accompanied by moral
implication. To begin with the people who have been securing contracts in the past, their decision
of the Mayor a free membership in an exclusive club is a mechanism to tie down his loyalty and
allegiance to them. In this manner, when the mayor has tenders, he will always be remembering
the golf club experience and the fact that he has always been offered a free entry, he would not
