First step: Determine Facts
From Peanuts to Prison is an intriguing case study that showcased the impact poor
decision making can impose on the fate of a firm. Basically, a peanut processing firm that
was running under the control of Peanut Corporation of America was identified to have been
the source of a contagious Salmonella outbreak that over time left approximately nine people
dead and more than 22,000 individuals ill (Grand Jury Indictment, 2013). In the given case, it
is apparent that all this would have been averted if Mary Wilkerson, who was by then Peanut
Corporation of America quality assurance manager (Richardson, 2017), had handled the
situation differently rather than being pressured to making poor and inconsiderate decisions.
By relying on the three ethical philosophies namely; utilitarianism, deontological and virtue
ethics; this paper will showcase alternative approaches that Mary should have considered in
