SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND DEPRESSION

INTRODUCTION
Apart from having a positive influence in our lives, social media platforms have become
inextricable to our lives, and currently, they are blamed for increasing mental health
complications among the youths. Physical distress, Depression, and anxiety being the key pieces
of evidence of social media influences among the youths. Keles, McCrae & Grealish (2019)
echoed a confab by the Royal Society for Public health and young health Movement of 2017 that
Depression and anxiety had adverse consequences in the development of the youths. This
includes and not limited to; poor educational achievements, impaired social relationships and
increased drug and substance abuse, suicides, school drop-outs, mental health problems among
others. The ideal causes of mental health problems in adolescents like Depression are, however,
not entirely known. However, due to the simultaneous increases in mental health complications,
a priority has been to understand the effects of social media on the health of adolescents. As
explained by Keles, McCrae & Grealish (2019), social media is a double-edged sword as it not
only cast negative implications to the youths but also enables them to express their thoughts and
feelings as well as receive social support from the public. This research study, therefore, will
focus on advancing research in the discipline of psychology through the provision of exhaustive
analysis on the impacts of social media on Depression. Depression has, in recent years, become a
significant issue amongst the youths, researching how social media use leads to Depression will
thus aid in the acquisition of a better understanding of Depression as a mental disorder. This, in
turn, will help mental health professionals to be better equipped with the concepts of handling
individuals with Depression.
