Grace-Farfaglia, P. (2019). Social Cognitive Theories and Electronic Health Design:
Scoping Review. JMIR Human Factors. 6(3):e11544) doi: 10.2196/11544
In this article, Grace-Farfaglia focuses on connecting social cognitive theories with
electronic health design. Fundamentally, she is attempting to review published content on
clinical trials, trying to establish evidence of the social cognitive theory-driven design of eHealth
interventions. The author recalls Bandura’s work saying that it envisioned a SCT serving a
function in the self-regulatory delivery system for health interventions that encompass computer
assistance and use. SCT is identified as an integrated model that entails the interaction of
personal factors and environmental events in the prediction of behavior. According to the author,
the theoretical framework is not only crucial but applicable today with people being able to track
their health behaviors while at the same time being digitally connected to external interactive
guidance and social support. The article points out that digital discussions in health intervention
are crucial in promoting adherence and behavioral change. The author seems to believe that for
young people, eHealth is crucial for they get to interact and share information in the most
relevant ways and strategies that they understand best including the use of emojis and videos.
After reviewing the available literature on the subject, the author concludes that the review
succeeds in linking social theory to web strategy, and it is pivotal in improving the impact and
sustainability of eHealth interactions.
This article fits well with the social cognitive theory since it is indeed based on the
theory. The element of trying to converge both the theory and eHealth seems fundamental in the
discussion of health especially since the world is changing f...
