Underground Economy and High Cost
Introduction
A country may experience economic crises due to poor policing or unregulated commercial
transactions. In most cases, such transactions occur in the underground economy. Therefore, the
underground economy includes the market sales that appear illegal, either due to unlawful trading
of the goods and services or since the businesses fail to fulfil the governmental reporting
requirements. The typical examples of underground transactions in the United States include street
drugs sale, illegal prostitution, untaxed labor, trafficking of goods into the country to evade duties
at the border, and untaxed sale of physical products. Human trafficking undertakings is also an
underground economy which incorporates illegal harvesting of human organs. Most of the
participants in the underground economy have inadequate skills, lack social networks, and
essential documentation necessary in the mainstream economy. The jobs operated by these people,
the majority of whom are undocumented immigrants, usually pay below the legitimate threshold
wage and fail to observe the government standards of health and safety. Therefore, as Robert Reich

influence public health. The relationship of these two phenomena reveals in blatant terms the
hazardous tradition of trickle-down self-sufficiency as well as the need for strategies which
respond to actual needs of people who are or will get affected. T...
